About Diabetes, UK

Globally, over 366 million people have diabetes and this is predicted to rise to 552 million by 2030, making diabetes one of the world’s most urgent health challenges. This report, released in The Independent for World Diabetes Day 2012 offers professional advice to the general public, as well as inspirational stories from those affected.

With so many people living with diabetes today, it is vital that we are aware of the risks, ways to prevent type 2 diabetes, and ways of managing the condition.

Working closely with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and Diabetes UK, the report offers expert advice, as well as drawing on the experience of those living with diabetes. Popstar Amelia Lily talks to us about her life with type 1 diabetes after being diagnosed aged 3. Olympic gold medallist Bas van de Goor also talks about his experience with diabetes and how sport has enabled him to stay in control.

The report was distributed nationally within The Independent newspaper and through various online platforms including the IDF website and social media channels and through the World Diabetes Day website and newsletters.

World Diabetes Day was a huge event on social media, especially Twitter where it was trending throughout the day. Our report circulated via partner associations such as the IDF, and Amelia Lily and Bas van de Goor also tweeted about the report to their followers. We gained great feedback from members of the public, clients ad partners, some examples here:
